playtime
our story

Playtime is a small thing, built around a big idea.

Children learn through their hands — stacking rings, tracing letters on wood, moving a bead along a wire. The toys we grew up with in Kenya didn’t always meet that need; the ones that did were imported, overpriced, or hard to find. We started Playtime so parents and teachers here wouldn’t have to settle.

how we started

One good wooden toy, carried home at a time.

Playtime began on a WhatsApp catalogue — a handful of Montessori pieces our own family loved, shared with friends who wanted the same for their children. The orders kept coming. The questions did too: which toys actually teach? Which ones last? Which ones are safe?

So we did the work of filtering, one toy at a time. We only kept what held up to real children, real classrooms, and the honest test of “would I buy this twice?” The result is this small, considered shop — every piece earns its place.

our vision

A Kenyan childhood where learning is already a joy by age six.

We want every curious little one in Kenya — in a city flat, a school in Kisumu, a shamba near Nakuru — to have access to the same thoughtful, hands-on learning materials that children in Montessori classrooms everywhere grow up with. No imported markup. No settling for less.

our mission

Put a brilliantly made, honestly priced learning toy into every child’s first six years.

We hand-pick Montessori-inspired wooden toys and learning games, price them fairly, and get them to your door across Kenya. We answer on WhatsApp, we accept M-Pesa, and we treat every order — one toy or a classroom bundle — like it matters. Because it does.

what we believe

Four quiet convictions you’ll feel in every order.

Shop the sale
  1. The hands lead the head

Little hands sort, stack, trace, and build; the thinking follows. We only stock toys that give hands real work to do.

  2. Fewer, better things

A plastic bin of forgotten plastic is not a childhood. One well-made wooden toy, loved for years, is.

  3. Learning should feel like play

If a child is laughing, they're learning. We pick materials that teach letters, numbers, shapes and sequencing without saying the word "lesson" once.

  4. Honest to parents

Real photos, real stock, real delivery times. No countdowns, no manufactured urgency, no small-print surprises at checkout.

for parents

Buy once. Let the toy do the parenting.

These are the toys that pull a toddler back on their own — the ones you’ll find on the mat half an hour later, still being tried in a new way. Fewer screens. Fewer tantrums. Longer, quieter afternoons.

good to know

Questions parents (politely) ask us.

Where is Playtime based?
We're in Nairobi, and we deliver across Kenya. Order on the site or chat with us on WhatsApp — a human on our side will reply.
How do you choose what you stock?
Everything in the shop is Montessori-inspired and chosen for durability. If it's plastic-y, breakable, or marketed harder than it works, it doesn't make the cut.
Are the toys safe?
Yes — wooden pieces are smooth-finished, painted with child-safe colours, and the small-parts age guidance on each product page is honest. If a toy is for 3+, we say so.
Can I buy as a classroom or school?
Absolutely. Message us on WhatsApp with your list and we'll put together a classroom bundle at the sale price — invoiced, delivered, done.
one more thing

Every toy in the shop is 50% off this Christmas.

If a page of story moved you, the shop will finish the job. Delivery across Kenya, pay with M-Pesa, chat with us on WhatsApp if you need help choosing.
